IMI 829 Powders┃Ti-5.5%Al-3.5%Sn-3%Zr-1%Nb-0.3%Mo-0.3%Si

IMI 829 contains mixtures of Titanium, Aluminium, Tin, Zirconium, Niobium and Molybdenum. It is lightweight high temperature alloy with high tensile, fatigue strength & toughness and very good creep & corrosion resistance, even at extreme temperatures, specially applied for compressor discs and engine blades.

IMI-829, a near-alpha and beta heat treated titanium alloy, is produced by Plasma Rotating Electrode Process (PREP) in the form of powder with common particle size distribution 45-150um or 45-105um.

Particle characterization of PREP IMI 829 powders can be checked by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), including the shape, size distribution and particle surface features (see Fig. 1). Fig. 1 shows the morphology and powder size distribution which are spherical in shape with a range of 45-105um and no any satellite balls.

The microstructural characterization of IMI-829 powders can be checked by optical microscope which consists of acicular alpha needles and a small volume fracture of retained beta phase which gives maximum creep resistance and crack growth properties.

The chemical composition of IMI-829 powder can be analyzed by ICP. Table 1 showed the weight percentage range of each element of the powder. The levels of Al, Sn and Zr are considered for maximum creep strength with stability and Nb & Mo for greater oxidation resistance.

The physical properties of IMI 829 powder made for compressor disc are summarised in Table 2, from which it can be seen that it has good fatigue and creep strength comparable with other titanium alloy powders at high temperature.
